Porcupine National Forest – UP Michigan

Standing Tall

We go to northern Wisconsin every year around the 4th of July for a family get together.  The area is in Vilas county and there are many, many chains of lakes in the area.  The one we always go to is called the Manitowish Water Chain which consists of 10 lakes that are interconnected through the Trout River Waterway.  Erin’s folks have a cabin on Little Star Lake and her grandparents live on Wild Rice Lake.  It’s about a 45 minute boat ride, door to door.  Anyway, it’s awesome fishing, skiing, boating, and swimming.  The kids are building lifelong memories up there.

A couple of years ago, while on this trip, we decided to drive up to Porcupine National Forest in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a day hike.  I took the picture above on the walk in and the picture below about halfway through to Lake Superior.

The forest is located on the shores of Lake Superior (we jumped in and it was cold).  The area is home to a very large tract of old growth hardwoods that light up the forest in a very cool way when the sun hits the canopy.  Next time we come we’re definitely going to camp because I hear the stargazing is awesome up there.

Here’s a picture of my family on the hike out.
